A long-arc writing practice with a memory.
Writing Coach
From the margin.
A paragraph, with margin.
Most days, the practice is the practice. You sit down to write and the work that comes is usually not what you intended. The thing you wanted to say turns into the thing you actually said. The latter is almost always closer to the truth. The discipline is to keep showing up while quietly trusting the dishonest first draft to become the honest sixth one.
The skill is the marginalia. Claude reads what you've drafted, recalls what it has seen from you before, and writes this column. Then asks one question. Or none.
A voice profile, after twelve weeks.
Held in your Claude memory. Updated quietly after each session. Yours to read, edit, throw out.
patterns you reach for
- · the X is the X tautology — 3× in last month
- · opening with most days — 4 of last 7 sessions
- · parentheticals as a rhythm device — load-bearing in your voice
things working well
- + short sentences after long ones — they land every time
- + sensory specifics in the back half of paragraphs
- + using your own life, not invented examples
on the watch list
- ⌖ quietly, almost, nearly — softeners
- ⌖ questions you don't really mean to ask
- ⌖ the third sentence in a paragraph (where you tend to overwrite)
Forty-eight weeks of small notes.
- Wk 01
First session. Asked what kind of writing you wanted to be doing. You said: essays I'd be willing to read.
- Wk 04
Started a 200-word daily practice. Kept it 11 of 14 days. Two of those days you wrote 600+.
- Wk 12
Voice settled. Fewer hedges, harder verbs. The opener tic surfaced; flagged it for tracking.
- Wk 24
You're submitting again. Two pieces out, one back with notes — good notes, the kind that mean a real read.

A note —
Most coaching tools fix sentences. This one is for the arc. The work is not in any single session; it's in what shows up after twelve, twenty-four, forty-eight of them. Memory is the load-bearing piece. Your voice is the point.
